Tapas literally means adding heat—and the heat from the Five Fires dries out the fluids in the body, making this sadhana an extremely difficult and profound austerity. Whatever austerity, whatever sacrifice, whatever spiritual offering we would like to make to come closer to God, to make ourselves more divine, or more pure beings is tapas. The more intense the tapas, the greater the purification.
