Why is Goddess Dhumvati depicted as the Goddess of misfortune, poverty, death, destruction, quarrels, or as being hungry and thirsty, etc?
(The iconography is quite contradictory to all the other bejeweled and bedecked Goddesses one normally comes across in the Hindu pantheon.)
Dhumavati is shown as the Goddess of misfortune, poverty, death, destruction, quarrels, or as being hungry and thirsty, etc. because She energizes both the Gods and Asuras.
Dhumavati’ appears old and decrepit indicating that all worldly attachments will meet their demise. She inspires and empowers us to pursue the Eternal!
She is the spirit behind Dhumralochana: Sinful Eyes, who causes every perception to be interpreted by selfishness.
When Dhumavati empowers the Asuras, She hides the Truth and the Reality, causes all to succumb to Maya and attachment.
And When She empowers the Gods, She causes devotees to forget Maya and attachments. She brings about the poverty of the physical world and blesses with spiritual riches. Without the need to contemplate the mundane, devotees can focus exclusively on the Divine.
When does one perform her Sadhana for Goddess Dhumavati’ and how?
One performs her Sadhana when beset with excess attachment and pain because of the loss of coveted circumstances, each according to his/her own Sankalpa.
There is no specific length of time required, but traditionally we will perform one lakh Japa for each syllable of the mantra.
The standard formula for the worship of any deity is their Gayatri, Mula Mantra Nyasa, Japa, Arpanam, and Pranam. In addition, any other Stotram available can be added.
Is it true that worshipping Dhumavati’ can lead to salvation or enlightenment?
Yes, and that is also true of every other form of divinity.
What is the significance of black crows around her?
The iconography of Dhumavati’ has crows around her. The crows are known to wait patiently, and to accept any prasad that they are offered. They do not pay attention to what is clean, what is conducive, what is appropriate. They scavenge and accept all.
